Featured Winemakers and Vineyards

Andrew Ling & Agitate Wines:

Andrew Ling’s journey into winemaking began somewhat by chance in 2001 as a vintage lab assistant—a role he took as a favour from his soccer coach. What started as a temporary gig turned into a lifelong passion, leading him to senior positions across notable wineries in Mudgee, Orange, and the Hunter Valley. In 2017, Ling took the helm at Carillion Wines, and by 2021, he launched his own label, Agitate Wines. With a focus on minimal intervention, Ling crafts wines that are "raw and textured," emphasising the natural characteristics of each varietal and terroir. Agitate Wines has quickly become known for its vibrant, unfiltered, and unfined wines, making Ling a notable figure in the local wine community.

M&J Becker Wines:

Bridging continents, Meagan and James Becker's winemaking journey spans from the lush vineyards of California to the rich soils of New South Wales. After honing their craft in Sonoma, they established M&J Becker Wines in 2015, selecting varietals that showcase the unique terroirs of both the US and Australia. Their work is particularly notable in the Hunter Valley, where they contribute to a collaborative winemaking facility. Here, they share ideas and innovations with other vintners, pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking while maintaining a commitment to organic practices at their Ablington Vineyard.

Peta Kotz & Sabi Wabi Wines:

Peta Kotz’s Sabi Wabi label is a testament to her dedication to challenging the status quo within the Hunter Valley’s wine scene. Launched in 2019, Kotz focuses on creating wines that embody the philosophy of "beauty amongst imperfection," using minimal intervention techniques. Her approach includes fermenting in alternative vessels such as ceramic and neutral oak, which, combined with methods like skin contact and carbonic maceration, produce textured and complex wines. Kotz’s efforts were recognized with the Young Gun Winemaker’s Choice award in 2022, underscoring her impact on the region's winemaking evolution.

Spotlight on Marco Lubiana:

Marco Lubiana, the 2024 Young Gun of Wine, represents the zenith of innovative winemaking in Australia. Launching his eponymous label in 2018, Lubiana focuses on crafting exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Tasmania’s Lucille Vineyard, recently converted to biodynamic farming by his family. His meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the winery allow the terroir to speak vividly through each bottle, showcasing the potential of Tasmania’s key grape varieties.
